Justin Bieber, Cara Delevingne, Kendall Jenner, Harry Styles, Gigi Hadid, Beyoncé, Adele, the Victoria Secret Angels. What makes these persons iconic?
Beauty, Talent, Fashion, Trends. The top icons of the current fashion industry are those who pull a huge following on social media. From Adele with 5.2 million Instagram followers to Justin Bieber with 50.7 million Instagram followers and climbing. Fashion magazines and brands don’t only want the top social media icons to sell their products, they build direct marketing campaigns around those who pull a very specific targeted demographic of potential buyers.
Look at Oliver Rousteing’s Balmain. Oliver picked the most talked about family on Instagram – the Kardashians as well as Rihanna, driving Balmain Paris to 3.3 million Instagram followers and selling loads of clothes as a by-product. His fashion icon choices and their subsequent followers were key in the development of the Balmain x H&M clothes line brought out in November 2015.
I founded one of the top PR agencies in London a year ago, JPR Media Group. What I grew to understand by hosting collaborative dinner parties with key representatives from Ralph Lauren, Stella McCartney, Christian Dior Beauty, Fendi, Coach, Roland Mouret, Liberty, Tod’s, Felder Felder is that social media influence is important and targeted social media influence, even more so.
When I build a PR strategy, produce an event, create a video, I want the output of this work to become seen and heard by the right audience and not only that, I want them to go VIRAL.
